Healthcare Reform and the NC Congressional Delegation

November 11, 2009 by Betsy Muse

When Lowell first contacted me to give an update on North Carolina’s congressional delegation he asked me to address whether North Carolina might choose to opt out of participating in programs set up through federal healthcare legislation. My first thought was, “this man doesn’t know the difference between North Carolina and South Carolina.” However, with the mood in my state and the look of the generic ballots coming out of Public Policy Polling, Democrats could lose our control of the state legislature next year and wind up looking more like South Carolina than we would like...politically speaking.

Civility and respect still matter in small towns

August 18, 2009 by Larry Kissell

Yesterday, I was honored to host Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Education Secretary Arne Duncan in Hamlet, NC for a continuation of President Obama’s Rural Listening Tour. Due to long-existing and unfair foreign trade deals, the uniforms worn by Transportation Security Administration workers can be manufactured overseas. Loopholes in those agreements are now being used as an excuse to continue to let this happen despite the clear “Buy American” intent of the Kissell Amendment.

February 6, 2006 by Betsy Muse

The Charlotte Observer has a piece this morning that makes the future of North Carolina's 8th Congressional District appear bleak. The financial numbers aren't looking good for Democrats Tim Dunn and Larry Kissell.

According to the FECinfo data compiled by the Observer, Robin Hayes had $733,837 in the bank as of 12/31/05. Tim Dunn had $47,118 and Larry Kissell had $3,653. It's a good thing the numbers don't tell the whole story.
